|Description Of Site
This site combines two high-rise buildings, 75 and 95 Hawthorne Street in San Francisco. One has 20 stories and the other 6.
These are multi-tenant buildings which house a combination of Federal Governmental offices, such as the EPA., INS' asylum office,
Health & Human Services Medicare and Medicaid offices, and the State Department's Passport Office, an Easter Seal Child Care Center,
a Federal employees fitness center, a small restaurant, and several private companies.
||Security By Design
Security By Design designed a security philosophy for this complex to address the multitude of security concerns and accommodate
the operational requirements of the various tenants. The garage was converted from a public lot to a private lot used only for this site.
Physical barriers were introduced to the main lobby to prevent someone from entering the office portions of the buildings without being
screened. The requirement for Federal agents to display their Federal credential was eliminated by utilizing building access control badges.
Optical turnstiles were utilized to allow authorized personnel to enter without interaction with the reception desk. A newly positioned
reception desk, an X-ray machine for scanning parcels, and a magnetometer for detecting metal were used for all persons who were not normally
working in the building. A visitor management system was created to allow the tenants to clear known visitors in advance to streamline the process.
Elevator controls were used for several purposes. One was to restrict persons from accessing the upper floors during non-business hours. Another
was to convert an elevator into an express mode when a prisoner had been arrested and was being removed from the building by Federal Agents.
A monitoring center for alarm processing, viewing activity at alarm points, and interacting with requests made through the intercom was created in
the lobby, behind the reception station.
